Kim Knox's "Warflesh" : A Recommended Read

Warflesh by Kim Knox avaliable from Ellora's Cave was reviewed by Joyfully Reviewed. They had this to say about this kick ass book:

The Summer Reading Trail

Two good friends of mine have started up a great way for promotion and lots of free reads with The Summer Reading Trail. The trail is open to a variety of genres from YA to Erotica and is a way to either get your work out there or just get more people loving your blog. Author Status

When you are a writer, sometimes there are no greater celebrates than other writers. Which on one hand, makes sense, on the other hand they are doing the same thing we do everyday--so what's so special that puts them above everyone else? To that question, I have no idea. I can only think that idolizing other writer's drives us to a higher place in our work and inspires us. At least, that's what it does for me.

I used to think my idolization was solely based on print book status but I've come to determine that's not true either as e-books work their way to the forefront. Which is kind of neat because it mean's I'll always have something to aspire to no matter what medium I'm kicking around at the time. When I see a writer that's outside my genre with kick ass world building and wonderful voice I just get plain giddy. There's no other way to describe it. Right now my current idolization of epic proportions has fallen on Kim Harrison's "The Hollow's Series" with female bounty hunter Rachel Morgan. I had seen my room mate in college read them but at the time I wasn't interested because as an English major I was reading too much text as it was. I didn't have enough time to read for fun anymore.

So, I was really excited when I picked up the first book for free off Kobo for my blackberry to read during a trip. It turns out I became quickly addicted and the next time I could bribe Husband to drive me to the bookstore I stocked up on all 7 of her books that were released and have been reading them non-stop for the past three weeks. This is how I get when I love and respect an author--complete and total devotion. I've now recommended her books to practically everyone I know and my Mother, who takes most of her book ques from me nowadays, is in love with her too. Not only does this speak to publicity and word of mouth, but yes---she is just that good---go pick up a Kim Harrison book---NOW.

She is by far one of those authors where I stand back after reading a book and simply go "Hot Damn, when can I do that?" and for an author, that's when you know you have a keeper as well as an author that will keep you striving to do your best time and again. If Kim Harrison can continue to deliver the gorgeous, snuggle worthy tomes of goodness, then why can't I?

Under The Bed Books: The Good, The Bad, and The "Why Did I Write That?"

Sometimes, writing a book is all about finishing it. Even when an author doesn't care what goes into the plot anymore or can only make so many more editorial tweaks--it just wants to be finished whether it's good or not. If it's not in the best shape it can be in and has a lot of work to get into prime condition, put it under the bed. Retire it from the sunshine and the light of a computer screen to let it age like fine wine. Then when your more advanced in your career pick it back up and see if it's salvageable.

I've done that with three manuscripts so far. The only full length books I've ever written. All had a  few tweaks here and there that just needed time and space. Two of them I need to totally rewrite. But I feel better knowing deep down under every writer's bed is an under the bed book just like mine. And-- it doesn't stop me from trying another full length either, which is the key. I've got six or seven long works in the fire right now because those under the bed books lit a fire under my butt. It's no longer a problem of "can I write long?" because I have completed books to say I can write a novel. It's more of a "be all you can be" thing. Cheesy, but effective.

An emotional track one goes through when you find out your precious baby book is an under the bed book:

1. Denial: Unwavering, unflinching, you'll probably scour the pages for the clue to why it needs to go under the bed and never see it because you've already spent so much time with it and think it's a masterpiece. You read every word over feeling every emotion you wrote and not letting go. This eventually leads to :
2. Anger: Why couldn't they see the beauty you created? You see it--right there *points* on page 432--that moment where you laughed for three minutes straight? What the hell is wrong with them! That was a beautiful moment worthy of publication! (Unfortunately, just one moment won't get you published, its a series of flawless little moments put together that make a great manuscript).
3. Fix-it Mode: This is the worst in all the stages because a writer could do irreparable damage to their manuscript and never know it. Either by editing too soon or trying to fix everything that went wrong only to throw out the whole manuscript entirely. Neither are very good options. Quell the fix-it mode before someone gets hurt. If you could fix it that quickly it would be a perfect, shining book and not meant for under the bed. Give up on the hopes that it's salvageable, play a little dirge, and stick it in a shoebox under the bed where you can never see it again.
4. Grief: You are only allowed three nights of this otherwise you'll never start the next masterpiece. And if you ever want to work on those graveyard babies again you have to churn out something better. Practice makes perfect so only one pint of ice cream and three days of sitting on the couch until punching at the keys resumes.

Under the bed books will always suck. But if we didn't finish them we'd never know what they are worthy of and that would be maddening. Finish, and worry about it later. A hard philosophy for me to follow, but a smart one none the less. I got some old manuscripts to revisit and it may take me awhile, but seeing them again will make it worth it.

Christian Bale has been the man of my dreams since the first time I saw him fling his semi-long hair back riding that painted horse and singing "Santa-Fe" in Newsies. I was 7. I have since followed his eggstrodinary career. Bale was born January 30, 1974 in Wales to his English parents: a commercial pilot and a circus clown. Now, if that isn't a great start for acting, I don't know what is anymore. His first major movie was a role in Empire of the Sun at age thirteen. From there he rose to fame in an eclectic mix of movies from almost every genre from kids films to horror flicks. Although I'll always love him for Little Women, Newsies, Swing Kids, and The Prestige. And, ya know, everything else he ever did. It's not like I own all his DVD's or anything. Bale currently lives in LA with his wife Sibi and his daughter Emmeline.
